Study Shows Damage from Toxins Can Be Passed Down Through Generations

This is an article I want all to read and realize! Toxins/harmful chemicals ARE a problem!

Study Shows Damage from Toxins Can Be Passed Down Through Generations
From Grist Magazine www.grist.org June 3, 2005

The Bad News Forebears Study suggests toxins’ effects may be passed down through generations. A pregnant woman’s exposure to toxic chemicals may cause harmful effects not only in her children, but in her grandchildren and theirs, a surprising new study suggests. For some time scientists have known about “epigenetic” changes: chemical modifications of DNA that affect the way it is expressed (phenotype), without changing the genetic code itself (genotype). What WashingtonState University researchers discovered — and report this week in the journal Science — is that such changes can be passed from generation to generation. This, suffice it to say, flies in the face of some fairly central assumptions in biology. It also raises disturbing questions about the long-term effects of chemical pollution. “In human terms, this would mean if your great-grandmother was exposed to an environmental toxin at a critical point in her pregnancy, you may have inherited the disease,” says lead researcher Michael Skinner. “It is a new way to think about disease.” And by “new” he means “freaky.” straight to the source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Tom Paulson, 03 Jun 2005

Help Keep Your Child Healthy

Filed under: Health, Personal Interests — Linda @ 6:13 pm

March 2004

Ever hear of Organic Style Magazine? I think it is one of the best! This article from the March issue is one I believe others need to read and REACT to! Our children NEED us to protect them.

Help Keep Your Child Healthy

You can help your child’s immune system stand up to the health threats from a sick school by reducing her exposure to toxins at home, according to Liz Blackburn, R.N., acting codirector of the Office of Children’s Health Protection at the EPA.

Make your home a smoke-free zone
Secondhand cigarette smoke contains more than 40 substances that have been shown to cause cancer in humans. Other compounds in smoke have been linked to asthma and ear infections in children.

Fight fungi
Repair leaky roofs and dripping plumbing to help keep your house dry and mold-free. If you find mold on hard surfaces, wash it off with soap and water, and dry the surface thoroughly. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles and carpets never get completely clean, and may need to be replaced if they become moldy.

Care for your linens
Wash bedding in hot water once a week and cover mattresses and pillows in dust-proof zippered covers to keep them free of asthma-triggering dust mites.

Get the lead out
If your home was built before 1978, have it tested for lead paint. Wash your floors and windowsills weekly with soap and warm water to protect your children from dust and peeling paint contaminated with lead. Have your children’s blood tested regularly.

Preempt pesticides
These days, there are organic or low-toxicity methods to help control even the trickiest pest problems. Visit the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (pesticide.org) to find out how to keep your home pest-free without chemicals.

Cut out chemical cleaning products
If the label says a product is poisonous or flammable, it could be dangerous. For a list of effective natural cleaning products, check under “The Green and Clean Arsenal” in the home archives of organicstyle.com.

Count on common sense
Wash your child’s hands, bottles, and toys often. Chemicals, pesticides, and lead paint are easily transferred from little hands to little mouths.

Riding my home of harmful chemicals is something that I have done for the past 5 years. After fighting asthma with both children and terrible allergies with myself I turned to environmental friendly products. Yes they can be expensive but not the ones I found. www.TriCountyMoms.com can tell you more!
